## Implementation

```javascript
function trimCharacter({ text, char }) { const escaped = char.replace(/[.*+?^${}()|[\]\\]/g, '\\$&'); return text.replace(new RegExp(`^(?:${escaped})+|(?:${escaped})+$`, 'g'), ''); }
```

## Input

```json
{
  "text": "--ana--",
  "char": "-"
}
```

## Expected output

```json
"ana"
```

## Edge case

Input:
```json
{
  "text": "a-b",
  "char": "-"
}
```
Output:
```json
"a-b"
```

## Limits

- The original split on the character and joined with commas, which also removed inner characters; this version trims the ends only.
